Who Is Responsible?
AstraZeneca put profits above the health and safety of patients
Seroquel® is of a class of drugs known as atypical antipsychotics, and
is one of AstraZeneca’s best selling drugs, generating sales of $1.5 billion last year alone.
Seroquel manufacturers AstraZeneca have been requested by US regulators
to include warnings about the risk of elevated blood sugar and diabetes.
The Japanese Seroquel label includes a prominent warning, specifically
stating that there is a link between diabetes and the use of Seroquel.
The United States label, however, does not reflect this known problem,
meaning that Seroquel users and their physicians may be unaware of
the need to monitor for signs of diabetes.
What AstraZeneca Should Have Done
-
Adequate and more accurate testing prior to FDA approval could have revealed the same risks that became known after the products were already on the market.
-
More extensive research could have been done prior to the approval and release of these drugs.
-
Advertising campaigns could have included more accurate information about the true effectiveness of these products.
-
Putting the safety of patients ahead of profits could have saved lives.
